WYONG DISTRICT MUSEUM & HISTORICAL SOCIETY

A big event is to happen at the Alison Homestead, home of the above Society, on Saturday 1st September.  1 Cape Rd Wyong.

The homestead dates back to 1825 when William Cape selected 3 parcels of land in the county of Cumberland, comprising 640 acres called Wyong Hill, 500 acres called Wyong Place and 1000 acres named Treelands.   By 1826 the Cape Family needed help and requested convict servants to assist them with the running of the properties and businesses.  1874 saw the death of William Cape.

William Alison bought Cape's land grants in 1875 from the descendants for the total of 1,640 pounds. He built the oldest sections of the current homestead in the same year and was also granted more land at Wyong Creek, Wallarah Creek, Budgewoi Creek and Jilliby Creek.  Early industries were dairy cattle, orchards and market Gardens.

William Alison enjoyed his estate for a short 10 years dieing in 1885 and leaving his estate to Charles Alison.

Thankfully for present day Wyong, Charles donated land for Wyong Public School, Post Office and School of Arts.  In 1887 the railway came to Wyong and Charles opened a sawmill near the present railway.  The property owned by the Alisons totalled 30,000 acres, virtually all of Wyong.

The museum has artifacts, articles, photographs and reference material relating to the settling of the Wyong area.  If you have never been before, I promise you will find it fascinating.

The museum is open Wednesday, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 noon to 4pm.  School groups and tours at other times by arrangement.  Phone 4352 1886.

Meetings are held on 4th Saturday each month at 10am at Alison Homestead.
