Artist of the Month

Carol Marando

is one of the artists whose studio at 203 Hillside Road, Avoca Beach is open on the third weekend each month as part of the 5 Lands Art Trail which opened on 14/15 January. 2012. Carol was born in Sydney in 1961 and attended art school at City Art Institute in the early 1980s, majoring in painting, drawing and lithography. She continued to paint, make prints, and exhibit her work for 20 years in various galleries, including the Rex Irwin Gallery and Eva Breuer Gallery, Sydney, The 460 Gallery, Green Point, as well as a solo show of monoprints at Niagara Gallery, Melbourne. She has been hung in the Portia Geach Exhibition twice and also did a short stint as an art critic at the Eastern Herald, Sydney. She has painted in oils, mainly still lifes and portraits. Concurrently since art school she has also been making jewellery. At first for herself, then for friends and eventually she was selling jewellery to shops and galleries all around Australia. In the mid 1990's after the birth of her two children. She decided to stop painting and concentrate solely on her jewellery making. By then she had started flame working, i.e. making her own unique components in the form of glass beads. Bead making from the beginning (1995), has been an intense passion and opened up a whole new (though somewhat small) world for Carol. She could endlessly explore colour and design in 3D, rather than the sometimes frustrating 2D world of painting. Carol has now been exhibiting her fabulous jewellery in galleries in Australia and New Zealand for almost 20 years. These include Kirra and Veronica George in Melbourne, Kerrie Lowe Gallery and 'Artisans in the Gardens", Sydney. She has been Artist in residence at the Lake Macquarie Gallery and Yulara, NT on numerous occasions. Carol specialises in one-of-a-kind pieces that have their genesis in highly ornamental jewellery from ancient cultures. Her beads are often the highly specialised technique of murrini making, with which she can create detailed pictures within each bead. When next taking in the 5 Lands Art Trail, don't miss Carol's colourful studio/gallery which is shared with her husband Jon Ellis, a landscape/portrait painter who is also pretty adept at sculpture and who has built the lovely courtyard at the front of this exciting studio/gallery. Local Patonga textile artist ,Diana Perlowski, has arranged and curated an exhibition from The Embroiderers Guild of NSW, Lateral Stitchers Group, of contemporary, creative embroidery and textiles, which will on display during the month of February. These works use a variety of techniques with backgrounds that may be handpainted, printed, monoprinted or dyed adding layers of hand or machine stitching, sheers, paper or synthetics which could be stressed by tearing or heating, to add texture and dimension. Artists often begin with sketch books to record and research topics which are then manipulated and changed to achieve the final design. Inspiration may be taken from the local environment, personal experiences or photographs. As usual Jocelyn and Robins paintings and drawings are on show at the Patonga Bakehouse Gallery, 19 Bay Street, which is open Sundays only, 11am to 3pm.
