ARTIST OF THE MONTH
Marijke Greenway
|
Marijke Greenway is an artist with three nationalities that have made up her experiences: born in Holland, then emigrating with her parents to South Africa and eventually choosing to live in Australia with husband and
three children during 1988.
Her early art studies took place in South Africa but it was in Australia that she became most prolific in her output and variety of subject matter and became equally at home with oils, watercolours and acrylics.
Marijke has accumulated an impressive list of awards and commendations for her work and she has been widely exhibited both in group and solo exhibitions as well as internationally during 2008 with a solo exhibition of her Greek watercolours on the island of Leros. This exhibition ?reece Unbuttonedwas first exhibited in the Foyer of the Gosford Regional Gallery in July 2007.
She has been published with major contributions to art magazines and is a member of several art societies, including the Royal Art Society, the Society of Marine Artists and locally, the Central Coast Art Society. She is a popular watercolour teacher and has tutored regulaly for 12 years.
Plein air painting is what she does best: ninety five per cent of her work is painted on site her favourite subject at present being trees she finds immense satisfaction in capturing the sense of ?eing there ? of distilling the essence of nature.
During April 2008 Marijke held a solo exhibition ?OR LOVE OF TREESin the Palm House, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney. She says that as her Dutch maiden name was ?an den Boogaardwhich means ?rom the orchardand her married name is ?reenway- that it was inevitable that she should be either an artist painting trees or a horticulturist growing them. She feels that she is both.
With fellow artist friend, Pim Sarti, she organised the 1st SHOWOFFS exhibition for Pearl Beach during October 2004. SHOWOFFS 2 followed in 2006, then with invited artists Peter Baka and Robyn Bellamy she organised FOUR SHOWOFFS for 2008. This year she is going ahead with plans for SHOWOFFS 2010 with Pim Sarti aned Robyn Bellamy, again during the October long weekend. These exhibitions have been very successful.
At the Royal Easter Show 2009 Marijke was awarded two Thirds and a First prize for her entries. She also achieved a highly Commended at the Royal Art Society the same month, as well as a First at the Gosford Show.
For 2009 Marijke worked towards two exhibitions, the first COLOUR MY WORLD which opened September 4 at Cudgegong Gallery, Gulgong where she was invited to stage two separate themes, the watercolours from her trip to Greece and the second her collection of tree paintings.
From the 23rd October 2009, Marijke staged her second solo exhibition at the Palm House in the Botanic Gardens in Sydney entitled, GREENWAY AT THE PALM HOUSE, which was so successful that she immediately applied for a repeat booking for 2010. Her new solo exhibition will be titled HEARTBEATS OF TREES which is appropriate to the setting.
Marijke opens her own studio/gallery at her home most Sundays from 11an to 5pm and she now has her own website, www.marijkegreenway.com
Marijke will be the tutor at the Central Coast Art Society workshop on Wednesday September 1st and 15th at the Gosford Arts Centre.

Julie Baily always puts in a good performance and she did it again this time. Brad Talbot was wonderful as the train-wreck character of Tyrone. Also good was Rohan Smith as Richard Selig, Mary's husband.
